Evaluation

Overall I loved completing this unit as it covered the area of the industry I am most interested in and gave me insight into what I enjoy most and may like to go in too after University.
I am happy with the theme I chose of skin and my decision to produce a trend feature focusing on current trends because this gave me the opportunity to create make up looks that I would personally wear as well as finding my research for the project really interesting. My idea developed from an interest into metallic make up, which actually ended up inspiring my idea for another unit. I researched current trends and found I could combine these with my initial interest in metallic, high shine looks and came up with my 'Get the Gloss' concept. I wanted to create a feature that took catwalk trends and made them wearable to the everyday woman.
It took me a long time to find models for my feature and made me appreciate how challenging collaborative projects can be. That said, this has given me confidence in approaching models and photographers and although I was unable to find a photographer that was free at the right time, I have made some contacts that could help me on future projects. Having to shoot and edit my images myself was a challenge but one I really enjoyed and I now realise I am capable of taking good enough photographs and retouching my images if I am unable to find anyone to collaborate with.
I enjoyed developing my practical skills in class and as a result of this I now feel more confident in techniques needed for creating make up and hair suitable for the Fashion industry and editorial work. These techniques really benefited me when creating the four looks for my feature and article and have taught me how to create make up that looks as good in person as it does on camera.
I chose to lay out my work like a magazine as this is the style in which I had written my trend feature and article. For this reason I decided to upload the two double page spreads I created into one post so that it flowed like a magazine. I also designed a header using my colour theme in the same style as my feature as I wanted my project to maintain a theme throughout. If I were to do this project again I would have liked experiment more with my page layout to best display my work.

Research into products for my article

In my article I am writing about how to maintain glowing skin all the way through to Winter. The article will recommend products for the reader to use to achieve this. I know I want to feature an Acid Toner containing AHA's, a Serum, a Mask and a illuminating product. Assuming most people already moisturise their face, I have not included a basic moisturiser as I want the article to focus on extra steps to add in to your skincare routine to keep skin hydrated and glowing through Winter. The things to think about when selecting products are the price and who the product will benefit and is suitable for.

The Acid Toner:

The reason I wanted to include a product like this is that recently the publicity around them has grown and so more and more women are currently beginning to work them into their routine. Acid toners usually contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids such as Glycolic, Salicylic or Tartaric which work through dead skin sells to reveal the brighter, smoother skin underneath. Some of these can be very expensive so I have decided to include one from a medium to low price point - the Pixi Glow Tonic. This is a very popular product which is gentle enough to use every day instead of just as a one off treatment and on both young and old skins alike.

The Serum:

Serums often target a specific issue with the skin but as this article is to be included in a magazine, I want to include a product that would work for a variety of skin types. As the article is on having glowing skin, moisture is the most important thing so I want to choose a very hydrating serum. The Aesop Parsley Seed serum fitted these criteria as containing Aloe Vera it is very moisturising on the skin but also contains anti oxidants which would appeal to people living in cities or that travel frequently.

The Mask:

The mask I am choosing is the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask. I'm choosing this because the mask is aimed at hydrating the skin and leaves the skin glowing when you wake up and also as I have chosen to not include an actual moisturiser, I wanted to include an overnight mask that can be used in the place of a night cream.

The Illuminator:

When used as a priming step before make up, illuminators can help fake glowing, healthy skin. I am choosing the MAC Strobe Cream as it is a cult classic, from a well known brand that readers would trust. It is also hydrating on the skin and it illuminates the skin well without containing actual sparkles.

Choosing my Final Images

These were the two images I had to choose between for my first look. I liked the second image because the plum toned eye make up is more visible but I preferred the first image overall. I think that it gives a better idea of the look as a whole as you can see the sleek hairstyle and I like the eye contact from the model.

Out of these two images I chose the one on the left. I liked the way the sheen of the skin came off on camera, and felt that the lips and eye make up stood out better. This image is also to be on a double page spread with the first image, so as in the first image the models eye's are open, I thought having her looking down would make a nice contrast.

I really love the image on the left as you can see the whole look clearly and I think it is a flattering angle of the model. Despite this I have chosen the second image to be my final one as one of the main focal points of the look is the glossy eye, which I think is more visible in this image. I also didn't want any of my poses or angles to be too similar, and I felt the pose in this was quite similar to the image I chose for the first look.

My Blog Header

This is the header I have designed for my sketch blog and final blog. I chose to use the same colour theme that I used in my article and feature as I want the theme to flow throughout my project. I used the same font and certain elements such as the peach boxes and swatches were also seen in my feature and article. I used one of my product shots in my header as I love the packaging of this particular product and felt that it fitted well.
